SALEM BAPTIST CHURCH
In January 1994, Rev. Donald and wife Patricia Bullard felt a continuing great need to reach lost people. They had a vision to build a church.
On January 16, 1994 the first organizational meeting was held at the Burnt Swamp Baptist Associational Building. Rev. Donald Bullard and 22 dedicated Christians joined together in prayer to charter a new Baptist work. Rev. Donald Bullard chaired the meeting. Brother William Barnes led the opening prayer, The congregation sang, Amazing Grace. Rev. Bullard read from Proverbs 29:18 “Where There Is No Vision, The People Will Perish” each person present agreed and felt the call to be a part of this great kingdom work. The foundation of the new work was founded on the Word of God.
The name “Salem” was taken from the Old Testament. The name “Jerusalem” was also known as Salem, the “City of Peace.” With that in mind, Salem would be a place where unsaved people could gather to know the Peace of God that passes all understanding through salvation. The saved would be able to find their needs met, whatever they might be, when they cried out to God. God will always be head of Salem.
Those meeting agreed ( and approved by the Executive Board) that Salem could begin Worship Services at the association building in Pembroke the first Sunday of February 94 until a mission facility could be built. Salem helped with the light bill while they were there. On February 20, 1994 three acres of land was purchased from Ms. Connie Sue Locklear, in the Red Hill Community for $16,000.00. An adjoining acre was purchased from Mr. Ronald Blue for $2,500.
On the new property a 40’X60’ block building was built for a sanctuary with the intentions of later serving as a fellowship hall. Members of the mission did all the work with the exception of the plumbing and the concrete, which were contracted. The mission facility was built for $31,000 but valued at $130,000.
The first service held in the new church was on a Wednesday night before the first Sunday of April 94. There were two Sunday school classrooms in the church building, four in the cinder block house and two in a mobile unit that was loaned to Salem from the North Carolina State Baptist Convention in Cary, NC for two years. The mission was constituted as Salem Missionary Baptist Church in 1994.
In 1996 a new sanctuary that would hold approximately 350 people and 225 in the classrooms was constructed. The church was constructed at a cost of $142,974.00. Its current value is $300,000.00.
