NEW POINT BAPTIST CHURCH

New Point Baptist Church is located about 3 miles south of Lumberton adjacent to highway # 41.  The church began as a fellowship group of brothers and sisters meeting in a gas station near Lumberton in the 1943.  At that time no name was given to the church group.  Early leaders included Mr. Luther Holmes, Mr. Ben Chavis, Mr. Charlie Bell and others.

Later in that same year, the group moved to the current site and constructed a facility.  The church was organized under the leadership of Rev. McKinley Locklear in September 1944 and was named New Point Baptist Church.  Charter members were: Rev. James E. Oxendine (called to pastor the church), Luther Holmes, Ben Chavis, Charlie Bell, and Clayton Carter.  Church membership was seven and twenty-one in Sunday School.

Much growth has occurred since its early life under the pastoral leadership of several pastors.  Pastors have included the following:

1944-49                      Rev. James E. Oxendine

1949-50           Rev. James E. Hammonds

1950-52                      Rev. Rufus Burns

1952-55                      Rev. L.B. Jacobs

1955-                              Rev. Sanford Locklear

Current            Rev. Ronald Locklear
